Saraine Devin
I am her biggest fan.
When she was 1 year old and
stared at the tv reading directions she could not yet speak,
I was a fan..
When she learned to walk and stopped at every door way because
she thought the door jam was a barrier, I was a fan.
When I realized she never sang abc's with me - because i sang too slow...
she thought something was wrong with me, I was a fan.
Then I heard her sing 3 times as fast and without the nursery rhymes.
I was a fan.
When she was 8 she called me in her room and had tears in her eyes.
I worried something was amiss and rushed to hear her conflict.
She raised a finger and turned away to choke back her tears.
I asked what was the matter.....
she shook her head slowly
raised her face to meet my gaze and quietly said "Life"
I was so proud, because she understood
at that point the struggle of existence and with that knowledge -
an appreciation for life - all essential steps to being a well formed human being.
I knew not only was I a fan - but I would not be alone there would be others.
I saw in my daughter the light that shines in my mother, her mother,
and both grand mothers before them..
that power of life that women sometimes possess is strong within her..
I didn't have to worry about her not understanding life -
All I had to do was prepare her for it..
I had to listen to learn who she was
now that she was fully aware and
burned through the infancy of childhood
she then approached her ripe old age of 10.
Her sparks of passion I knew had come..
Her passion was writing.
We spoke of theory and structure and of characters .
And though there are so many times in life
plans get interrupted
so many times
wants give way to needs
Often we must be reminded that
We are containers for what we spend
our time doing...
I didn't know the warmth
that life can give a one..
Until I laughed at her jokes
and saw understanding in her eyes
and read her words
from her creative spirit...
to my heart.
Dad loves you little one.
I love you All-Ways
Always
Never Be led astray
